Seriously?
So, I actually did a replay for Arc Rise Fantasia like around late Aug. I couldn't take my current save file any longer since it was missing a weapon for Rastan, and three unique drops from three bosses, namely Weiss, Chimera and Banchu, not to mention lots of steals for Lv 3 and Lv 4 Gem Shards from a bunch of bosses which I could have gotten so I decided play it again. My first save was at the Verct Skywalk before I dropped it.
Didn't do the Rogress quest much differently from the last time, but I went for Rufunga, Urgula and Banchu this time. First time it was Rufunga, Urgula and Papirusagu. And both times I failed Squill, although I did it on purpose on the replay :') But after having tried all the five optional Rogress quest, my opinion for the battles to get them?
Rufunga
The beach battle against Alf, Adele and Leslie is such a pain. If it weren't for the fact that Rufunga was such a useful Rogress equip for L'Arc, and not to mention that Alf has a unique drop for an item that cannot be found elsewhere, I might have not gone through the trouble. For this battle, magic resists, especially fire and wind, Wind Raystone breaking and lots of items to win it. Also, I needed to drop Alf in one shot with a Trinity Act when he's almost at critical HP so Frantic Defense won't activate. At least after you drop Alf, the rest of the battle is much more managable.
Squill
Err, I really can't be bothered to seriously equipping myself to defeat Squill (you need to beat him in 10 turns?). The only reason I triggered this and fail it on purpose is to hijack all the treasure chests in Soliton Caves earlier and not have to wait later (one of the weapons I need for Serge is found there) and to steal the Flood Shard from Squill :') I will be able to do a fourth Rogress quest anyway if I fail one of the first three so why not? Squill is easy to reach though. The problem is beating him in 10 turns(?) which requires extremely heavy fire magic syncing and Squill heals himself every turn if he's taken damage, not to mention you need to heal your team too. Maybe if you had Urgula to summon on him...
Urgula
Urgula wasn't too bad to reach first. You have to reach the Hall of Bonding before Alf to get him, which is do not open any treasure chests when you hit a certain area (L'Arc will hint at it where he says now is not the time to pick items) and just immediately go to the Hall of Bonding, though you have to be careful not to fall off the fragile bridges as that would cost you time to beat Alf to Urgula. Also, at least there is a Save Point just before the Hall of Bonding, unlike Papirusagu, so if you do get wiped out or something you can just reload and not to have to do the whole thing again.
Urgula is actually a pain to fight. Not to mention that I needed to steal that Inferno Shard from him. His attacks hit quite hard, but the fire ones are not a problem with all the fire resists I had on L'Arc, Rastan and Serge. Even his Logos attack was nothing. His annoying attack was his Assault Excel Act which has no element. Well, his Lava Hammer was annoying too, it didn't do much damage, but it has a really wide AoE and it kept on confusing both L'Arc and Rastan. Well it wasn't a problem for L'Arc since I had SP Auto Cure Arm Force on him, but I had to cure it on Rastan... I wasn't worried about Serge getting blasted by fire attacks and getting confused, I had the Ruby on him which gives +8 fire resist and confuse immunity. Also, for this battle, having Dispel Magic is an absolute must so you can dispel the effects of Urgula's Valiant Wave, which gives him Reflect Damage which you do not want happening to you. I always have Dispel Magic on Rastan for bosses so I can get rid of any undesirable effects on the enemy.
After stealing the Inferno Shard, I beat Urgula by constantly breaking the Fire Raystones (I was already breaking them before I succeeded with the steal) and mainly showering him with synced Lv 3 Water magic (Yay Serge!) after the Fire Raystones were destroyed (you want those destroyed to minimize fire damage from Urgula and use the full power of your Water magic) and a Trinity Act somewhere along the way. I had Water Strike on L'Arc so he was using some normal attacks here and there. One of the harder Rogress battle but not so bad if you have fire resist on your team. Don't forget to equip the Ruby which is found at the early parts of Ellodge Volcano!
Papirusagu
I did this Rogress quest in my first play file for the fourth Rogress quest since I failed Squill. Papirusagu wasn't really that hard to beat Alf to first (the stupid Elevator is so slow!), just make sure not to rush headlong and get into battles which are easy to avoid if you don't rush and don't open any treasure chests (except when you're on the floor that leads to Papirusagu and before Alf's party gets on the elevator).
As for the battle, I forgot to equip Serge with wind resist so he was taking a crap ton of damage, so when I actually fought Papirusagu, it took me a while to defeat him. Can't remember how it went, but I recall I used Serge's Earthen Crush and the Geo Impact Trinity Act quite a lot and whatever Earth magic that I had available plus breaking Wind Raystones (you want those destroyed to minimize wind damage from Papirusagu and use the full power of your Earth magic), but I managed to beat him without having to go through the tower again (I had a lot of items), which you really don't want happening since there is no Save Point before the battle against Papirusagu. Though as I recall, he's as annoying to fight as Urgula. One of the harder Rogress battle but not so bad if you have wind resist on your team. Also, pick up the Emerald which is found just before the elevator to Papirusagu. It gives +8 Wind resist which you really want against him. You can steal a Gale Shard from him BTW.
Banchu
I did this Rogress quest in my second play file for the fourth Rogress quest since I failed Squill (on purpose). The only reason I went for Banchu was because he was one of the bosses that had a unique drop which you cannot find elsewhere. I don't really like the summon. It's not difficult to be able to beat Alf to Banchu, you just need to make sure you save the all the people of Hilbert that you come across and Banchu is practically yours.
For the battle, the FAQ I had been using made Banchu sound harder than he actually is :/ He was the easiest Rogress to beat. No Raystone breaking needed and since there wasn't anything worthwhile to steal, I immediately went on the offensive. I equipped sleep immunity on Rastan and Sickness immunity on Serge and SP Auto Cure on L'Arc since the warning attack from Banchu that the party warns you about can inflict those on whoever it hits. Be sure to spread out the party though so Ground Shot only hits one person. I just blasted Banchu with Lv 3 synced Fire magic since I have Fire magic on all three characters. Though I found out that Banchu had Block Magical Arm Force on him so one round of magic didn't get through. Apparently the FAQ didn't mention this otherwise I would have put Anti-Force Arm Force on Serge (to have a chance of negating Banchu's Block Magical) instead of Block Defense Arm Force (to have a chance to counter Frantic Defense in case I couldn't drop him with one Trinity Act or Excel Trinity in my case).
Again, I had Dispel Magic on Rastan in case I needed to get rid of the Physical Immunity on Banchu before hitting him with a Trinity Act (or Excel Trinity in my case). In the end, I defeated Banchu with L'Arc's Disaster Fang Excel Trinity when Banchu had around 19000 HP left so Frantic Defense won't activate.
I think I only used like about 3 High Liquids for this battle, compared to Urgula/Papirusagu. And I defeated Banchu like in only 5 to 7 turns, much faster than Urgula.
Also, I found out a really interestng thing today. I could use an Excel Trinity with the boys (L'Arc, Rastan and Serge) at Lv 41 (actually it's more like I only need L'Arc at Lv 40, Rastan at Lv 41 and Serge at Lv 37 where they would have a max AP total of 18) to excute an Excel Trinity with the three of them, since the requirement to activate an Excel Trinity was for the total SP cost for the Excel Acts the three characters are using to be 200% in total. I had noticed an interesting little tidbit when I was trying to decide how many levels I should gain back at the part where I had to rescue Angie before fighting Paula and Luna (I was devising my strategy and not to mention I needed to steal the complete set of Lv 4 gem shards which they both have). L'Arc's Ignis Beat costs 75% SP and 7 AP to use, and Rastan learns Frost Fang at Lv 41 which costs 75% SP and 7 AP to use, which makes a total of 150% SP. I still needed a 50% SP Excel Act at the minumum. Then I noticed that Serge's Aqua Blade costs 50% SP but only 4 AP (even Ryfia's Aqua Spiral requires 50% SP and 5 AP) to use...which requires you needing only 18 AP to execute an Excel Trinity with the three of them, and L'Arc gets a Max AP up at Lv 40, and by that time both Serge and Rastan already had 6 AP max, which makes a total of 18 AP max by the time L'Arc was Lv 40 so I just needed to level all three of them to Lv 41 (for Rastan to get Frost Fang) before continuing and to fight Paula and Luna. Serge's Million Regret Excel Trinity totally wiped the floor against Paula (weak against Ice (Water + Earth)). Also, holy crap, Serge was the one that did the killing blow against both Paula and Luna (weak against Light (Wind + Fire)) O_o; I knocked out Luna with a solo Banishing Ray sync with Serge.
All in all, I really like the second file a lot more and I'm doing much better than the first one. I've gotten the weapon I had missed for Rastan the first time round, and the two unique drops from Weiss and Chimera (Didn't even had to reload my save! Banchu doesn't count since the drop is 100%, it's the boss that's missable), and have a lot more Gem Shards this time round. Not only that, I'm luckier this time round with Gem Shard drops from breaking Raystones. Though I did equip to increase my chances of gem shard drops from breaking Raystones a little (I broke Raystones with Serge when I was doing a bit of leveling and while I was going through the dungeons), but nontheless, it worked out such that I have like one more Rain Gem and one more Firestorm Gem compared to the first file, and I already have one Inferno Gem already. Not only that, I'm about two Gale Shards, two Flood Shards and one Terra Shard short to have a complete set of Lv 4 magic gems for one person before the Verct Skywalk, and I'm currently only at the Flagship Percival (the first time I reached Verct Skywalk I don't even have a single Lv 4 magic gem yet) part of the story. Once I get a complete set of Lv 4 magic gems, I'm resetting Serge's orb and putting the gems on him so that he will have access to every single magic in the game and he'll be throwing magic left and right at bosses OwO Rastan is more of my support magic caster (Dispel Magic, Life Force, Force Shield, Magic Shell, Regeneration) so I'll probably only have all magic up to Lv 3 for him once I get a second set of Lv 4 magic gems which I'm gonna put on L'Arc, which I'll have by the time I finish the Verct Skywalk, and I usually only sync magic with Serge and L'Arc anyway since Rastan is kind of the item user in my party, though Rastan would make a really good damage absorber later...
God I love this game so much despite the sub-par localisation and voice acting. I think Serge may have become my favourite character... He's really amusing at times and is serious when he needs to be and I pretty much crack up at quite a lot of conversations where he's involved. I like Rastan and L'Arc too, but eh. The girls are fun too of course.
Gah, I better stop rambling already and go to bed.
