It's already almost one week into December. About three weeks left for the Christmas submissions and about four weeks for the New Year submissions. Those that are planning to do something, try not to wait until the last minute to do it and end up rushing something that would have looked nice. There is no limit to how many you can submit. Just click link above for the details.

So far, I've only gotten one submission...it's kind of depressing...

I just got a hold of the Jan issue of Comp Ace and took a look at the contents page...it seems that Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology and Tales of the Abyss: Senketsu no Asch (next chapter in the March issue of Comp Ace so one more month wait) are not the only stuff from Tales of Magazine that migrated there. Vesperia Gag Theater Tales V also migrated there (anyone wants to t/l? :x). I thought it ended with Tales of Magazine...since Vol 14 didn't say anything about it...

Valkyria Chronicles is serialised in that magazine O_o

And the paper is really nice and the ink is even, so it looks like scanlations for those two series will be continued using magazine raws, but I currently need a translator for Tales of the Abyss: Senketsu no Asch (and lots of other stuff I plan on releasing) cause the translator I had on it hasn't replied for a long time and I'm calling her MIA for now, she was supposed to be sending me t/l for the next chapter soon) and someone to help with Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology and maybe t/l Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 (there are only two volumes) also...

Won't be getting the Jan issue of Comptiq so soon, the Dec issue is only coming in this Monday (sea shipment, and the Dec issue is released on 10th Nov) which is the issue where the next chapter of Tales of Vesperia continues its serialisation in, since it comes by sea shipment (Comp Ace comes by air shipment), but I'm getting the Dec issue anyway since there seems to be something related to Tales of Magazine there...not sure, but Comptiq might be having a section for Tales of Magazine, where all the Tales of news are put there. I'll know when I get the Dec issue and look at it...

Will also be collecting the Jan issue of Dengeki Maoh at the same time when Comptiq is in...

I also took a subscription for both Comptiq and Comp Ace.

*sigh* More translators disappearing without telling me... For once, I'm glad that Ju-da-su ([livejournal.com profile] argentum_canine) is the translator for quite a number of Eternal's projects...nonetheless, I need fresh translator blood for Eternal once again...

JUST A REMINDER

I just got a hold of the latest issue (Vol 14) of Tales of Magazine and took a quick look at when the next issue is going to be out...and if I'm interpreting it right (I don't really understand Japanese very well), but it seems that Tales of Magazine will be stopping publication, maybe forever. The latest Tales of Series news will be published in the main magazine, a monthly game magazine called Comptiq. Comptiq also has some manga that are being serialised in it, and it also has a magazine where they specially publish manga in, a monthly manga magazine called Compace. As for the manga that are being serialised in Tales of Magazine, this is what is going to happen...

- Tales of Vesperia (To continue serialisation in Comptiq)
- Tales of the Abyss: Senketsu no Asch (To continue serialisation in Compace)
- Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (To continue serialisation in Compace)
- Tales of Phantasia (Final chapter in Vol 14 of Tales of Magazine)
- Tales of Hearts (This is just a really long introduction to the game, where only the very first part of the game is serialised. The manga has already ended, but there is still a chance it will continue serialisation in the future)
- Tales of Vesperia: Flynn (Still no news on when it will resume serialisation, currently still on hiatus)

I've checked with Kinokuniya and they bring in both magazines, so scanlations for these series I'm releasing under Eternal won't change. I'll be buying both Comptiq and Compace monthly, and I'll continue to release them using magazine scans, unless the printing and/or quality of the paper are bad enough that it will take quite a lot of time to clean/fix even after doing my pre-cleaning on the scans (my pre-cleaning technique for the manga from Tales of Magazine is very nice that it reduces the overall time needed to clean a page, it's actually on par with tankoubon quality), which then I'll switch completely to tankoubon scans. Tales of Vesperia won't be an issue, since scans from game magazines are always very nice and the ink is all even and printed on decent/good paper (I'm almost pretty sure that the paper used to print Comptiq is the same as Tales of Magazine and the printing is very nice, I've seen Comptiq on the shelves and I've looked at the paper if my memory serves me right), I'm just a bit worried for Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology and Tales of the Abyss: Senketsu no Asch since Compace is a manga magazine and the quality of the printing and paper may be quite bad. We'll see.

Why can't they put all the manga in the same magazine =/ Buying two magazines means spending more money, even though I don't need to get Tales of Magazine anymore(?).

I also need to start catching up to the scanlations for Tales of Vesperia...that will be the number one priority for Eternal as far as releases go. Tankoubon version re-releases for Tales of Vesperia still won't be happening so soon, as I'm still more focused on working on the magazine version.

Just posting for people that might be interested in the news.
eternal_rena: (Yuri & Repede Letter)
Just like last year, I'm once again accepting fan submissions for Eternal's Christmas 2009 and New Year 2010 releases to be inserted into whatever that is going to be released. I'm doing this much, much earlier this year so that hopefully more people can participate and people have more time to work on stuff.

For those that are interested, if you want to submit a fan art for Eternal to be included into the Christmas and/or New Year releases (you can do one for each, more than one for the same holiday, whatever), it has to be based on a manga scanlation project that Eternal is working on and it has to be an active project. One of the Tales of Series is your best bet. You can visit the projects page to see the list of the current active projects. Future projects that you know about (it has its own forum already if it's a future project, just compare the forums with the projects page on the site) will also do.

No stealing other people's fan arts and claiming it as your own! They must be fan art that is done by you!

You can also do a collage of different characters from any of the projects or a collage of characters from the different series that Eternal is working on. Please use only official art, art from manga or maybe even novels! No using other people's fan arts to do this!

One last thing, I will also accept colored manga page(s)/panel(s) related to or from any of Eternal's manga scanlation projects, so if you want to color in some page(s)/panel(s) either from Eternal's currently released manga chapters or something that you have, feel free!

To sumbit, e-mail your finished work(s) to eternal@eternalmanga.net

Please include some text, like "Merry Christmas - 2009" for Christmas for example, into your submission and be sure to include your name or nickname (this is a MUST), a URL if you want, like linking to your LJ, whatever, to identify that it's done by you. Also, please make sure your submissions are not too large and do not exceed 1 MB in size if possible. If they are too big, I will resize and resave them to make them smaller, to my own discretion.

Thanks a lot for reading this and I really hope to see more stuff (compared to last year) being submitted in =)

The deadlines are as follows; For Christmas, 24th December 2009 at 12 PM GMT +0800. For New Year, 31st December 2009 at 12 PM GMT +0800.

This is stupid. The cable TV box top that was set to record the three shows that I watch on Saturday (Digimon Data Squad, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension, Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive) failed on me. It just...didn't record it, even though it's been set to series recording =/ The Ben 10 Alien Force episode on Friday didn't record either, but it recorded Monday to Thursday's episodes fine -__- Did that stupid thing go bonkers? This isn't the first time it happened either. Don't tell me I need to start setting the recording every Thursday or Friday just to make sure it works?

Thankfully I have a back up recording set on the VCR, so in the end, I didn't miss anything. THANK GOD FOR BACK UPS. The only way for this to fail is if the VCR got turned off at it's power source (either the plug or a power failure) and all the recording schedules got deleted and I didn't set them back, or the VHS tape decided the break or something, but this hasn't happened...I've had my VHS tapes last for a really long time.

Why is old technology more reliable than the new ones??? Grrr. And I wanted to keep this latest episode of PR: Operation Overdrive too, after watching it and seeing Mack being all funny and awesome at the same time *shot* Not that Tyzonn isn't awesome in his own way XD

Also, I think I've almost found the setting that will get my ToS OVA encodes all nice and no more interlacing/combing and it deinterlacing all the frames, without the video being jerky...tried out more options too and will check and see how they turn out.

And...Lingwe has finally sent the questions for Eternal's scanlator interview over at MangaHelpers O_o Need to think about it before I start working on what I want to say...I'm a bit nervous but I want the answers to be perfect at the same time...

Wahhhhhhh

So many things to do...so little time...still have a bunch of public raws that I've scanned but have not rotated, cropped and resized yet...not to mention I already have my copy of Tales of Magazine for this month to look through, then update Eternal's project status threads...then start scanning the next chapter of Tales of Vesperia...._.

Yes, Tales of Vesperia scanlation is currently lagging. Behind. Maybe I should ask [livejournal.com profile] chiyo_sama to help me typeset again ~__~ But...Ughhhhhhh. Should I or should I not? I think I should... But I haven't even proofread the script for Chapter 5.5 yet, and I still need to do the final QC for release for Chapter 6. Looks like I'm going to have to do a batch chapter release since I can sit down and QC a lot of chapters for release at one go anyway...:'D

And I have two issues of Dengeki Maoh to look at. Not to mention some people are bothering me about the Tales of Hearts one shot in the previous month's issue. And I need to scan the next chapter of World Destruction for Kuu. Meh.

And I need to start clearing out my copies of Shounen Rival and Weekly Shounen Magazine. Magazine shelf running out of space, and those magazines are pretty much done anyway (and I need the space to dump my precious Dengeki Maoh (only for the Tales of series stuff in there though, so I need to pull out the pages I want and discard the rest) and Tales of Magazine). ._.

Not to mention I still haven't for the life of me figured out the settings in Telecide() for AVISynth to deinterlace all the frames correctly for the Tales of Symphonia OVA encodes for Abyssal Chronicles...GAH. I hate you interlaced source material! But I shall not give up cause I know it can be done! I really do not want to have to use freezeframe() to...fix those stupid frames cause it would make the video look like there's a slight lag since it's a motion frame from the interlaced frame (is it even interlaced or just combed???) to the okay ones...

And I want to play Pokemon Platinum T_T

And I'm not really making that much real progress story wise in Pokemon Platinum either *shot* Ever since I beat Wake and got the ability to use Surf out of battle...I've been doing exploring. I especially went to Iron Island first though to pick up the Riolu Egg that Riley gives you...so I can use those places with trainers to level it up...so I can finally have my team for the rest of the game up and running.

Current progress so far...
5 Gym Badges, currently exploring. Almost done though. Then it's off to challenge Byron.

My team progress so far...
Torterra Lv 43
Staraptor Lv 41
Floatzel Lv 42
Houndoom Lv 42
Raichu Lv 43
Lucario Lv 34

Okay...first order of business tonight, clear out Shounen Rival and look through Dengeki Maoh two months issues and Tales of Magazine while try to figure out Telecide() options for the ToS OVA encoding by encoding only the first few minutes of it...

Also...I'm still trying to decide whether to scanlate Tales of the Abyss: Tsuiko no Jade via magazine scans or tanko scans...but magazine only if I can figure out how to use this new denoising program to denoise nicely and its supposed to be better than Neat Image...GAHHHHHHHHHHH

Great...

eternal_rena: (Raven Feeling Down)
I dunno why, but for some reason, I'm not in much of a mood to scan Fairy Tail and Code: Breaker tonight (or even do any of my daily internet stuff). Looks like they will only be done tomorrow/friday night. Sorry to all of you that are waiting for my raws D:

It might be because that this is kind of bothering me right now. I've just skimmed through two scanlations for Fairy Tail that was released by INP-Mangaz and I Eat Manga (yes, they're both using Heiji's raws)...both versions have something horribly wrong quality wise with them.

For INP-Mangaz, the cleaning is terrible. The grays are horrible to say the least...and some of the pages look like they're half done. I know Neat Image messes up the grays, heck, I know this cause I've messed around with it before and I know what Neat Image can do to the grays. Neat Image works very well with denoising blacks and whites, but it horribly messes up certain types of grays, though not all grays mind you, Neat Image works very nicely on most of the pages on my Tales of Magazine manga scans (only the character page and the pages with the Tales of Series logo's grays gets messed up) and even tankoubon scans, achieving the same end result as Nagi's ([livejournal.com profile] chiyo_sama) cleans if done the normal way. Without clever use of filters to fix those grays for WSM or WSJ type of scans, the end result looks horrible (That is why M-Hario's cleans look wonderful, and I know Neat Image did indeed mess up the grays, but it was fixed up nicely).

For I Eat Manga, the double pages are not joined into one image. Seriously, is it really that hard to tell if something is a double page or not? Even before I got my copy of this week's Weekly Shounen Magazine, I already knew that Fairy Tail has two double pages this week from Heiji's raws. Of course, since the original raws were kind of blur, sharpening was somewhat done to it and overall it doesn't look very nice still >__o Not only that, the quality ain't even better than Franky House's releases, and it doesn't seem to maintain a stable quality...either =/

Edit: I just looked at pi_te_ku's release now...and theirs too also have issues. The grays are okay, don't look bad, but...they didn't join the double pages properly -__-. Not only that, they didn't crop away the excess black parts that is not part of the page (due to the original raw). Again, I consider those pages half-done. Not to mention they forgot to put in the credits ~__~

Also, I don't think people should worry too much about losing art to cropping cause after doing so much scanning, I've found out that there really is no way to not lose any art at the sides to cropping after rotation, especially if the page itself is originally crooked and if you want to make it straight, and well, you should make it straight cause it looks nicer. Even if the original page itself is straight, you'll still lose a bit of stuff from the sides, though not as much. The only way not to lose anything is to redraw the missing parts, and I find that it really isn't worth the time at all... As for double pages, they're just sometimes misaligned, and sometimes one of the page is higher than the other to get it aligned, and it's also the fault of the original, and the only way to fix it is to redraw, which...isn't worth the time if you're just going to lose some art at the top or the bottom, but you'll definitely have to redraw the centre where the two pages join...haha.
> End Edit

In the end, I'm just really sad that the manga scanlation community has come to this state, it's all about speed and not quality now, considering I've been amongst the community for 10 years or so, and I myself have contributed quite a lot to it. Not to mention that I'm quite picky about quality (which is also why I'm picky over the people that wants to join Eternal).

Sigh...Where is Ju-da-su ([livejournal.com profile] argentum_canine)...I think I need someone to chat with over on MSN, especially when working on stuff for WSM D: Maybe I should just go and play Pokemon Platinum instead...I can't do anything that needs this type of concentration if I'm in this mood. *sigh* Is there anyway you can be online tomorrow night when continuing my scanning for WSM this week? Even if it's just you being random or weird, at least it takes all these things that are bothering me at away...

Ugh...I haven't posted much in my journal...except my public raw scans and Eternal's releases lately *shot*

Need to post more...but I've got so much scanning to catch up on for both Eternal and [livejournal.com profile] talesofscans, so not much time to post DX

At least once I completely resolve the encoding problems for my DVD rips into anime raws for the Tales of Symphonia OVA for Abyssal Chronicles, I'll finally be able to get more into the scanning mode. Not to mention scanlation stuff for Eternal is piling up again...x_x

At least I've completely solved the problem for deinterlacing the video. Now all that is left is to figure out how to decimate the video properly so that when it's converted from 29.97 fps to 23.976 fps (which is the frame rate anime raws should have) so that the video will run smoothly and not laggy, jerky or jumpy (I'm having a jumping issue at the start of the video right now, otherwise it's smooth the rest of the way). It seems I can't change the cycle to any number other than cycle=5 otherwise the length/time of the video would be too long or too short from the original VOB video (there cannot be any time difference. At the most, only by 1 sec, otherwise the audio will be out of sync, and the audio is encoded separately to be muxed with the video later)...I'll probably need to mess around with the mode parameter with different modes to handle decimating the video so that I can get it smooth the entire way. Mode=2 is the one that is giving me the jumpy scene at the beginning of the video :S Mode=0 is a no go as it's causing jerky and lagginess at certain parts of the video which doesn't happen in the original VOB video source.

I think that's enough of my random babbling about video encoding which most of you on my flist probably don't understand...haha. Please, just ignore me. I'm new to encoding myself. AC's encoder (the one encoding Tales of the Abyss for Abyssal Chronicles) is the one teaching me stuff and I'm just playing around with what he taught XD

Time to sleep!

Finally done with the New Year release for my manga group, Eternal.

I'm really pooped out. Five QCs in...like 6 hours. Time to slack off and rest!

Lots of things to catch up on now that this is done. Lots of stuff to scan for manga scanlations and also for Tales of Scans. Not only that, I want to work on and finish up the Skills Guide/FAQ for Tales of Vesperia and also to move all of the Tales of Series related scans at Tales of Scans into a gallery for easier viewing and also to create batch downloads for them. The gallery is already set up at my web host here, but there is nothing uploaded at the moment. I'm still in the process of tweaking the settings to my liking. It's also called Tales of Scans since it's a gallery to accompany it. This is on top of the to do list, the only things that override it are the weekly scans for Weekly Shounen Magazine and the scanlation for Tales of Vesperia. As usual, I'll be scanning as I'm doing internet stuffs.

There is also another thing I need to do though...try ripping my Tales of Symphonia OVA DVDs to produce raws. I hope it goes right. I've never ripped DVDs before...only music CDs x_x

Not only that, lots of games to play too...ugh...so much to do...and so little time...D: Oh well, I'll just do whatever I can!

Happy New Year!
